VG30DE sounds so good at redline! BUT, I think our J's are really under-powered.

What will be your "most bang-for-the-buck" choice for more power:1) Turbo2) Stillen header3) JWT pop charger4) Under-drive pulley

yeah, something might not be right..b/c with the engine rated @ ~210 ..the parasitic loss from the transmission shouldnt be 30hp.

Or at least I wouldnt think it would be that much. Although that is a 15% loss.

Actually 180 is a REALLY good rwhp number for 210 hp through an automatic.

Turbo is your most bang but also your most buck - will be $4,000 - $5,000 when all is said and done.

Stillen headers won't fit.

Pop charger will sound good but won't add but a couple of hp if any. Nothing you can even tell.

Pulleys free up a few ponies as well but only barely noticable.

IMO if you want the most bang for you buck, start with a different vehicle. Easier and cheaper.

Has anyone actually tried any headers on their J?

I've heard the stillen ones would fit, but that may have been wrong information.

And IMO too, if you're going to spend $4000-5000 to add a turbo to the existing engine...might as well do what a few have done around here and do a complete swap with the VG30DETT. I'm still debating on the VH41 swap after I get my garage built, but with 208000 miles I dont know if it's worth it to drop much more into mine. And I'm kinda with gr8scott72on if you want the most bang for your buck, start with another car.

You can always wait a few months for the 09 GTR. *big cheasy grin*

-- Agreed! My X-flow is so loud at WOT that the attention freaks me out a little. I can set off car alarms. I've never had her dyno'd but I'd really like to, I prolly will once I do away with my cats, 96 & older are exempt here now.

-- Brandonjustice, there's an article in the new maxim on the gtr. It's a poor article by automotive review standards, but there are cool pics of the dash and carbon fiber underbody.

I'll have to check that out. I was watching video of the 07 LA auto show at work today. $69k to start, but one can dream. lol

How much benefit would you get out of removing the cats on the J?

Plain and simple, the J is so barely moddable that it's not worth it to try. Obviously a TT swap will do the trick, but I would buy an N/A Z32 and swap that before I swapped a J (if I had money for either), and then be able to get a nice suspension setup, brake kit, pretty much anything else.

We're talking about people doing their dryer hose intakes, and high flow mufflers, but serously, we're all under 200whp in a sort of heavy luxury sedan. Plus, you can only move as much air through the exhaust as the smallest part of it will move, so unless you're going to do a full custom setup that finds its way around the spare tire and stay dual all the way back, any gains from intake mods will be so small it won't matter.

As far as bang-for-buck, I've heard the UD pulley gives you the most power on the butt-dyno, but that's just what I've heard. I haven't driven a J without one.

If you want something you can mod, start with a car that has an aftermarket following to begin with.

-- Well, probably not a whole lot. I'd guess 10 tops, but with my current setup it might put my rating just over 250, so on a dyno I might break 200 at the wheel.

-- Yoda, now that we don't have to pay for emissions testing, which was $24, all there is is a $12 safety inspection fee. Plus since my car is an odd year I got a 2yr registration, odd year odd rule I guess. But in today's world it's pretty rare that something gets cheaper AND easier, so I'm a happy Stevie.

Don't just chop off your cats. Your car will sound like crap. Been there, done that.

I have both cats replaced with small straight thru resonators, the mid mufflers replaced with magnaflow straight thru oval mufflers, and then two more small straight thru resonators behind those (to kill the drone a little) going straight back to two magnaflow chrome tips, both on one side.
