I saw this on ebay and was wondering if anybody has adapted the 94 mirror into their Q and what is involved? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...%3AIT

My guess would be that it would work, since the electronics for the auto-dim are incorporated entirely in the mirror and the "switches" that go with it.

However:

(a) there may be a lot of effort involved to modify the mounting area for the switches.

(b) a personal issue with me is that I hated the auto-dim, only because it would not stay set in the off (no auto) position through a car re-start cycle (in my 1995 Q45)!

I do not drive with my mirrors dimmed at all (particularly on this car since I had darkened the rear glass ... 90% ... a bit too much!) and it was a pain to have to remember to turn it off every time I started the car. Simple rocker switches (to retain the setting choice) instead of momentary push-buttons would have been a smarter design decision!

So, I strongly prefer the "old-fashioned" flip-the-mirror approach in my minimalist 2003 M45! Some things should not be automated!

Well, I love auto dim even with tint.

Funny thing I have noticed on all 1994+ is the plastic covering over the auto dim switch panel is almost never removed during PDI.

If you use it, then yes, the fact that it turns itself on every time would not be an issue. Sure!

Since I don't use dimmed mirrors, the fact that I had to turn auto-dim off each time, was a dumb design!

You know if you dont like it you can always just unplug it!!!

Theres like a 5 pin connector for it, mainly for the illumination, but you could in theory give it 12V power and it should work. I bet it mounts the same...
