Okie im lost. A friend and I changed my valve cover gasket and when we were done we went for a drive. All was well. It was a job well done. We drove for about a half hour and i felt a better drive now that i had replaced that valve cover gasket. I went out with the car later and during my drive i lost power and stalled luckily making it into a parking lot. I opened the hood and to my surprise the wire coming from the coil was hanging off the distributer. When i tried to put the wire back in it was loose and wouldnt hold so i opened up the end to get it to fit snugg. I got it to hold, slid the boot back in place and was pretty sure that it would just start right up. It did, although now the idle was really rough and it seemed like it was about to give out. When i gave it gas i could smell gas fumes and i could see smoke coming out of the exhaust. I left the car there thinking it might be the valve cover gasket, maybe the sealent gook blew out releasing pressure. I went back the next day with my friend and brought a new distributer cap and rotor because we happened to notice some grime inside one of the distributer sockets. Replaced the distributor cap, rotor, all the wires even the spark plugs. Started the car back up and still a really rough idle along with the gas smell and smoke. We took the spark plugs out and noticed they all smelt like gas and were black at the tips. So we thought maybe it is the valve cover gasket and changed it again.....we kept the same gasket and just reapplied the sealent to the half moon spots. Of course we followed the loosen and tighten chart to assure that we would do the job right. We started it up and still a rough idle. Im thinking that maybe this is something electrical and maybe it has to do with a sensor or knocking off the timing. Im really confused. Does anyone have any advice that might help? Thanks!

Maybe you should try getting a new car.

Haha. Someone said that to me when my car stalled at a light in NYC once... what an ***!

Wow! I can't believe there's no reply!

Anyway, you should check the timing (there's a procedure to follow in the FSM that will ensure that the ECU accepts the changes). Also, there was oil in your distributor, so we should go to a junk yard n get a new one n see if that works. I hear that the coil is hard to kill, but if all else fails, we can try replacing that last.
