Okay, I need some help. I asked this questions some years ago, and some how did not go thru with it. I dont know why.I remember maxnix or someone saying something about the obdII is different or something like that. Well here is my dilemma. My 96 engine has 82k miles.. Im definite of it. I was there when the engine was taken out. And i still have possession of the engine and speedometer. My mech really doesn't know much about the 96.. He is a 1st gen lover. What he knows about the 2nd gen is the little he has learned about mine and some of the compatible 1st gen and 2nd gen item..Well this is my question. Can i put the 96 engine in my 95? If so, what items do i need to change. please give me exact details so i can tell him so he can tell me how much he would charge, so i can see if its worth it to me and him..So please wes and u other geniuses of Q's i need ur recommendations. I would really like to put this 96 engine in my car. I trust it and it is in good condition.

Legally its possible but the work needed to do it is not worth it.

The engine and transmission are tied together far more closely than the 1990-1994 Q45's. Nineteen ninety five was the year they used OBD2 but never really finished it.

So you will need the complete harness for the engine and transmission along with the engine and transmission.

Your better off rebuilding your current engine, if the Australians can do it so can we.

Whats wrong with a 1991-1992 Q45 engine besides being illegal?

I excluded 1990, 1993-1996 because one idles a little rougher supposedly and the others don't have sodium filled exhast valves (yet to be truely confirmed) Respectvly.

And I am sorry if I struck a nerver with anyone with the above.

Besides the 1996 being OBD II, which the 1995 is not, it lacks the intake camshafts' advance mechanism.

Almost positive the '96 transmission is the same as the '95 and that you could put the detuned '96 engine in your car but not sure why you would want to.

BTW, I have a new NOS '96 G50 transmission w/TC (not rebuilt) if anyone needs one. It's been sitting untouched in my garage for the past ten years.

How and why did you get the new transmission, and how much do you want for it?

The transmission in my 1990 was acting up after a flush so I was anticipating replacing it when with the new one that I got on Ebay for $800. I latter learned that the '90 1-2 gear ratios are lower and that it would work better in a 1994-96. My 1995 only has about 85k miles so it is unlikely that I will need it anytime soon. I'm open to offers however, shipping would definitely be a factor as it is very heavy.

Ship it without the bellhousing to save weight and cut the size down.

I wonder if a transmission "ages" just sitting idle for 10 plus years? Do seals dry out and other parts fatigue just sitting there???

Really the 96 is like freee!!! i dont have to pay for it.. i put in some work for it.. So its free.. So im gonna use it.. I dont know anyone with a 95 engine In good condition and trusted low milage. And if i did, they wont do even swap! ANd like i said i asked how much to rebuil, my mech doesnt rebild em. SOmething about he needs a machine shop.. Anyways. he said he used to know some ppl, but they charge like 4500 for that.. ANd im thinking, oreilly charges the same thing. So....And it cost 2k, to take mine out and put another in. We havent even started talking about injectors yet!!!! I could easily buy one from jdm or something but then id be left with an engine that i wont get much money for. I tried selling it before and everyone tried to talk to too far down. So with that in mind once again thats why. I didnt know putting a 96 in there would be bringing my car down.. I thought since its a 96 it should be better. i dont wanna have to go buy a 96 Q so i can use that engine...

I remember seeing a post by Q45tech saying that the transmission can go for a year sitting (Without fluid circulation)

Why not buy another car or look at junkyard engines?

Its easy to tell how good a engine is by inspecting the hoses, pulling off the valve cover and timing chain cover.

Having gone that route before, you will likely be better off selling what you have and getting another low mile used one even if you can do most of the work yourself. Have you personally tested the replacement engine?

The 1996 VH has cams that do not adjust at 4k rpms. So with that I would say that you cannot use the engine in the 95 Q. Do not know how much the 95 ecu would like that. You could however have the heads from the 95 engine placed on the 96 engine and go with that.

That would be ideal but there are two problems. The 1996 Q45 ECU is'nt configured for VVT and I am not sure how hard it would be to add that function. And the cost of labor would go up because of that but you might as well reseal the valve covers and change the plugs so your good for 10 years/100K. The other benifit it is inspecting the cams and HLA's.

But 1995 Q45 ECU in a 1996 is a no no.

1996 Q45 ECU being modified is a no no, Not sure about JDM ECU's.
