I took my Q apart today. I found metal-backed guides in it. I was glad. And everything looked nice in side. It looked like it's never been a part before. The RTV silicone was baby blue. So I put the car back togeter. I thing I found wrong is the distributor is leaking oil. It's leaking a good amount.JN

Do you have pics... I don't mean to second guess your work, but two of the guides were metal backed on all years. The other two, though, were not. I just want to make sure that you checked the right guides. It would be a bummer to drive it and have one fail because of an oooops.

Anyway... good stuff!

No I don't have pics. I don't have a camera witch sucks. The six guides were metal backed with silver metel. There are two guides. One by the oil pump (Witch it's behind the oil pump gear). Then one by the water pump on the right side of the motor the (left of the water pump) if you are looking at the front of of the motor). It then their are one on each tensioner. So thats a total of 4. and two for the oil pump chain And that makes 6.

Just for future information, please post your VIN... It won't be a definative answer on the change-over date, but it might help get an idea.

Here's a picture of mine after the swap at T3, so if yours looked like this you're good. Sorry about the poor picture quality.

When you say the distributor is leaking, do you mean the crank angle sensor? Maybe a leak around the rocker cover on that side or the small upper timing cover?

Good to see someone taking the time to check the guides instead of another "I need a motor" post!

You're right about the 6 guides... I was thinking about only the upper and lower guides on both of the timing chains. I had forgotten about the little guides on the oil pump.

Anyway... if they all had a metal backer on them, then you are good to go. Just wanted to make sure before things went horribly awry!

Good going on the chain guides! I think (do you have the Infiniti Dealer Service records?) you may have the first documented late model 1993 to have the new guides.

But your other comment is puzzling as there is no distributor.

It's the crank angle sensor. It's leaks from the bottom were the wires come out of it. I put my VIN on the post. Thanks for the help everyone.

good info!looks like you've owned the car since Aug 2004? only 1 previous title, in CT. dang, you drive a lot--32k in 1 year?Brian's suggestion on infiniti service records is good- might tell if the PO had it done---also don't forget to put the full 280+ lb-ft of torq on your crankshaft bolt......

Which is just ridiculous... 280 ft/lbs!! For those of you keeping track at home... I could put a 1 ft bar on the bolt. Then STAND on the bar, and still be well short of the torque required.

Now... my college physics is a bit rusty. Even on the basics of leverage, I don't remember a whole lot. But, I believe each time you double the length of the lever you also double the force applied?? So, at 2 ft of bar I would still need to apply 140 ft/lbs? And, at 4 ft. of bar I would still be applying 70 ft/lbs? I am probably wrong... but, man that is a lot of torque. I remember doing it... and thats just absurd. I could have had my 9 year old daughter stand on a bar extending 4 ft from the bolt and only just barely met the torque requirements.

I have seen these also with metal-backed chain guides as early as 8/92. Most time after June, July, or August of any year like 8/92 would be considered a 93 anyway! I have taken apart 2/92 and they have had the plastic backed guides.

I distinctly remember another instance from a member's trip to T3... but I can't remember his name? Anyhow, it's got to be a welcome sight to pull the cover and only need to reseal it! Thanks again pjq45 for posting your VIN and letting us know.

I remember it was speculated then that the engines with the new guides were installed not in sequence as an upgrade, but just shuffled in with engines with the old guides until the engines old guides were gone. Hence, no known cut off date or VIN.
