Hey guys, I'm new here and I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I've got a 93 skyline gts-t rb20 single turbo with 3" catback other than that its stock, it drives ok, but it smokes kinda bad, black smoke, so I'm guessing it's rinning rich maybe? and sometimes it will cut off while driving like if I push the clutch in to slow down. My friend thinks it needs a new mass airflow sensor... It's got new plugs. any ideas? thanks

Your def running rich, does it smoke more or less while in boost? Also have you tested it for a Boost leak?

I just did a Skyline with a rb25 here a few weeks back and it would Poor black smoke out while under throttle of any kind. It also was showing boost on the gauge. but run like Dog crap.

1 I set the timing, It was off 5 degree's2nd I found a 90 degree coupler with a hole in the middle which was causing a bad boost leak. After we fixed both issues, I re-gapped his plugs and it ran like a champ.

No I haven't tested it for a boost leak but I'll try checking it out. Well I just found out that it has 300zx plugs in it. would that work? or no? If not what kind of plugs should I get for it? Also It seems like it kinda skips like its misfiring from like 3k-4k rpms when you get on it.

300ZedX (Z31) plugs should be ok methinks, but I would still look into the copper bcpr6es-11, gapped to 0.8 I believe. I just checked on Sparkplugs.com and the bcpr6es-11 are stock for an RB20! So there is your answer, Vern!

+1 for boost leaks too.

I worked on the skyline today and I found an engine ground that was broken like right above the turbo, so I reattached it, and I found a vacuum line that wasn't connected to the hard line that runs to the charcoal canister coming from the tb (not sure if it was already off or if it came off when I took the intake pipe off) and I found an extra intake hose clamp just sitting on the frame rail which was kinda weird cuz it wasn't missing any. But somehow after all that it was running great... It wasn't misfiring anymore and it felt a lot stronger and I don't think it was smoking so bad anymore either. Also I don't know if this needs a gasket or not but the elbow pipe bolted to the turbo didn't have a gasket, does it need one? It's just metal bolted to metal so I would think it should have one but I dunno. here's a pic

yes that pipe needs some type of gasket. Its most likely leaking your newly compressed air out.

Thanks. I figured it did. So what would a gasket like that be called? I mean I could just get some gasket maker if I can't find one. jw

The stock turbo compressor gasket is a metal one and I wouldn't try sealing it with RTV or anything like that. The heat and pressure will ultimately cause it to fail. The gasket probably costs $5 new.
