I spent a few minutes searching for this since I assumed it would be a common topic around here, but I didn't find anything.

The thing is, I am planning on removing the crappy foam wing since the bolts are rusting out quite badly. I just thought that before I jumped into it, I would ask around to see if there were any common problems associated with this project.

I'll probably take some pictures and document the process if it goes well.

You gotta patch the holes or you'll have a soggy trunk. Removable is pretty basic as you said. If your lucky enough to find a spolierless hatch, you could replace your rusty hatch.

Hopefully, someone can chime in with first hand info...

ahah

A lot of people agree, if you're lucky enough to find a wingless/rustless hatch in a junkyard, to just swap them out.

i was gonna paint my car anyway, so I just removed the wing and filled in the holes myself. I should have gotten the holes welded, but I didnt have access to a welder and didnt want to pay someone to do it. So...I used JB weld and aluminum sheeting. then I filled in the holes with a thin layer of bondo. It's not the best way to do it..nor the correct way, but it works and hasn't cracked or anything. It's been one year. A hatch costs a decent chunk of money considering my budget at the time. Otherwise...It would have been wayyyy easier to just replace the hatch with a spoilerless one. good luck with that

I found that thread, but that's not the same wing I have so that information didn't totally apply to me. I have the wing that's flat against the hatch and has bolts all the way across.

A new hatch is certainly not in my budget right now, either. I actually planned on using JB weld and bondo as stated above, just wondered if anyone else had done it and ran into and unforseen issues.

yyyeeeah. i took mine off with a bunch of pulling. but then again, it was so rusted that it kinda just came off. I ended up patching the holes after rustoleuming them (quite well, i thought), and then i had the body shop patch the remaining screw holes and repaint the car.

yeah, i have rust spots again. also, the paint kind of sucks after 2 years. in retrospect, a $217 paint job wasnt a good idea.
