Looking to buy a 94 Q45. Heard there is a possibility that some of the earlier models in 94 may have used the older plastic guides. Can anyone confirm the build date cut-off to guarantee the all metal guides.

Many thanks!

McClureThis is very very rare for a 94 to not have the update.Know of only a single case ever, in 3.5 years on the net researching this issue, with the most Q knowledgable minds in the country (some of which are on this board).

If you own or are buying a 94, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have written a couple of articles on the subject of 90-93 Q45 guides and included the double checked information from that source in them as a caveat.

In the 2 yearsSince then (2 years ago) I have never heard anywhere of another single case in a 94.As a matter of fact even most of the late 93's have the updated guides.

Some of us have speculated that at different assembly locations someone used up the bottom of the parts bin, or use parts until exhausted. The (unofficial) comment of some corporate employees is, that it is their understanding that the last couple of months of 93 production ,as well as all 94's and up, are safe.We know of a couple of exceptions to this in 93's and one in a 94.

I have been following this extremely closely in the last few years and am pretty paranoid about the guides as well, but at this point it seems that that one 94 must have been an abberation.

If I were to buy a 94, I am not sure even I would bother to check, that's how comforatble I am with the 94's at this point.(and thats not counting all the other reliabiltity imropvements the 94's enjoy).

hi palmerwnd,

how difficult is it to check for defective chain guides, and what all is involved?

Is it something that has to be done by a mechanic?

Just have to remove front timing chain covers. Oh, and a few other things too.

Search on timing chains to view prior comprehensive posts.

Still the 94 oil chain is the same design [90-96] and at high mileage [200,000 miles] I would want to check the oil chain and tensioner if I planned on keeping the car to 250-300,000 miles.

Proof of oil changes perferrably every 3,750 miles or 90 days is the best insurance. Nothing exceeding 7,500 or 6 months should be considered and that may limit the useful engine life to 150,000 miles.

It only takes one extended interval to get the engine gunked up and even subsequent 1,000 mile intervals will take years to correct the lapse.

Thanks a million gents! I'm glad to hear the 94's have been revised with the new guides. Sounds like I can buy it with certain confidence that I won't have this trouble.

It's a 94 Q45 with traction control... 145k miles. I don't believe it has the active suspension option.

Anything else major that I should look for when I go to inspect this ride?

The Q45 transmission was upgraded in 1994 as well correct?

I currently drive a hot-rodded Merkur XR4ti which is a blast, but I'm looking for a larger 4 door with some decent low end torque. The Q45 sounds like it fits the bill. Haven't driven one yet, but I'm inspecting this one on Thursday evening.

If any of you know of any other Q45's for sale in Northern California, I'm all ears... especially if it' an 90 or 91 with the guides and transmission already done. $6k max to spend on this one.

I could be an official owner as early as Friday!

Much obliged,Scott McClure

I have a 90 with the updated guides that's almost on the market ... it could be in Northern CA with a few days shipping. :)
