The alternator has gone out in my '93 Q45. My mechanic cannot find any step-by-step instructions on replacing it! He says the only way is to disassemble everything from the top.
Can anyone help me? Where can I find step-by-step instructions? Is there an easy way? PLEASE!!!
Thanks!
Maria

Maria, going from the top is extremely difficult, would cost you a lot and shred his hands. The best way is to go from underneath. He will need to remove the passenger side tension rod then unbolt the AC compressor, leaving the refrigerant lines still attached. With the compressor loose, the alternator, which sits above it, can be accessed.

I would find a new Mechanic ASAP!

Any tech with a good noggin should be able to figure it out without a step by step guide.

If you have a lift and can access the alternator from below it must be easier. As you can see from the following slide show, replacing the alternator from the top involves using some tricks and a hex head bolt for one of the cable connections so an angle ratchet can be used to reach behind the alternator. If you successfully remote the alternator from the top then you will relate to some slides in the show link.

This slide show was from the first time I changed an alternator on any car. Though my neighbor came over to check on me as he could hear screams coming from my garage the evening replaced the one in the pictures.

Thank you! Any other suggesstions? The mechanic is a friend of mine, but doing it out of his shop. He is very willing to not go from the top, but he has no access to any instructions on how to! He said the mechanics book for that year and model does not exist! Where could I find more info?

I had to attack it from both the top and bottom. Unbolting the compressor is the way to go unless you have someone with really small hands to hold the retaining nut in place while you get the bolt started.

With the difficulty involved, you really want to do OEM when replacing. With an aftermarket, you might be doing this again in a year or two.
