When I purchased this car, the previous owner stated that the gas smell appeared when he overfilled the tank one day about a month prior to my purchase. I have looked deep. I can find no leaks anywhere. I have searched the forums and have not found any threads that contain any info other than "chech the fuel line for leaks".

Does anyone have any experience that could point me in the right direction?

Update 01/09/2010: see my last post below. You won't believe what I found.

When does it smell? All the time or just while the car is running?

There is a mild smell always (can only smell it when it in closed quarters like a garage), but when it's running, it's overpowering inside the cab of the car. Someone suggested it might be the Carbon Canister because it may have filled up with fuel and may not have evaporated out yet?

That's dangerous! You might cause a fire by driving it without checking for fuel leaks. There is a fuel line right below the intake manifold which often leaks and is very hard to get too. Underneath the throttle linkage. Check all the rubber lines and replace if they look old with highpressure rated lines. Tighten all the fuel clamps you can see.

Try this, it's usually the issue. If not post back and we can go from there, last thing you want is a fire.

Agreed. Will follow those steps tomorrow (putting a lot of that car back together then anyway).

Are you guys ready for this?

The jackass that owned this car before me only put 2 screws in the fuel pump cover and the sending unit cover EACH. Additionally, there were only 2 screws on the dust cover as well.

I put the proper screws in, and amazingly the gas smell disappeared.

This clown was UNREAL.

This car has had a lot of issues, but I think I have gotten to the bottom of MOST of them. It has been difficult, but the payoff is gonna be good. It is looking really good, and running really good too. Mostly little stuff left to do.
