I live in Columbia, SC, my friend has a 93 J30t with 180k on it. It started running VERY rich and bellowing white smoke from the exhaust. A mechanic friend of mine looked at it and thought is was an injector prob, but was not sure, a trip to the stealership and $90 later resulted in a confirmation of his diag but the stealership also said the cam position sensor was throwing a code. Though they also said the cam sensor was a work/no work component.

6 new injectors, 6 new plugs now replaced. The engine still runs rich but no white smoke, though a good smell of gas under the hood. We took the intake manifold etc off to do the injector replacement. Wish I'd seen this site before we did it that was http://www.fuzzycats.com/j30.htm One coil pack was also bad and we replaced it. The timing belt, fuel filter and water pump were recently replaced as well. There is a small leak in the exhaust so that accounts for some of the smell under the hood, but it is still more prominent than when the last bit of work was done.

The mechanic says he wants to put it on a fuel pressure gauge to see if that may be a prob. We replaced a good many of the hoses when put it back together. Bottom line is too much fuel is still getting in the engine ( I think )

Anything else that you can think of to try to help her get her car back on the road and get me my car back from her :D would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks :help json

And the Consult Computer diagnosis says what. The long reason things run rich [black smoke] is because some sensor error commanded/fooled ecu into rich.

No black smoke, ever . . . white smoke before injectors replaced, no smoke from tail pipe now. Don't have a computer or the extra $100 the Stealership wants to run another diag. Can we reset the ECU and if so how? Thanks !

The ECU can be reset by unplugging the battery for 24 hours. But if a sensor is not working right, it might not make a difference. Maybe the O2 sensor? You can replace one likely culprit for about $120, with no guarantees.

The ecu self checks all sensors and resets itself at every crank shutoff cycle if the problem goes away........it may hold a warning code but that is just for information purposes. If the code is serious it may go into fail safe [ignore a bogus signal] to protect the engine as best it can

Now block learn [adaptive learn] fuel trim has a memory and changes showly [at most 5 minutes of running is enough to reset [forget] serious problems.

Why when we read codes and reset, we restart to make sure the code just doesn't come back.

Why do you think dealer is stealing your money by charging you to do a diagnosis. You can buy your own test equipment and manuals for $8,000 and duplicate their proceedures.

Seems like $100 is a small price to pay to avoid the bigger expenditure.........don't expect that you would use their diagnosis services 80 times in the cars life.

Follow all the various proceedures in FSM to check for sensor operation......coolant temp sensor [the real one that feeds ecu not inside gauge].

Do the same things a tech would do to check the systems out.Without factual data impossible to diagnose via INET.

Too bad. The J is a great car. Ideas for scientificly maintaining your car can be had here on NICO. Best on the net.

The VG30DE is a great engine. Often, going to the Z32.org site can be helpful for ideas as the J shares the same motor with the NA Z32.
