A consult test would most likely give you the info you need, sounds like you have either a connection problem (intermittent open circuit) or I have seen the camshaft pos sensor do what you are describing. Sensor is located on the front of the drivers side head and connects to the exhaust camshaft. Since you unplugged the sensor to change the timing belt, check the connector to make sure it is fully seated. Not getting too deep here, there is a LED type light inside the sensor that shines through a metal plate which sends a signal to the ECM, have seen when the sensor gets hot, it will open the circuit and shut things down, When the engine cools things go back to normal operation. If you don't want to have the vehicle scanned, next time the vehicle won't start and the engine is at operating temperature, pour some cold water on the sensor and try it again. Be surprised how you can diagnois certain things when you dont have the proper diagnostic equipment. That was from the old school...........
