If it does it seemingly intermittant and it doesnt corrsepond to bumps regularly, then id guess its the heat shield thats bad.. you can just rip it off the car, just dont park over dry leaves

If you get the rattle while accelerating, than it's definatly heatshields.

I can't think of a rattling noise in the struts.

Mine use to rattle on acceleration. I had them replaced since I do park on grass.

the best way to find out what it is..... buy some roll up ramps (they have to be the shallow incline ones!!) .. back up them and slide underneath with the car running. You'll find your problem immediately.

I've had a few straps break on my exhaust heat sheilds.. which will definitely cause them to rattle. Depending on where they broke- they can rattle at different times. I would bet its your exhaust- not your struts.

I'm talking about the heat sheilds on TOP of the exhaust pipes that keep the floor of the cabin cool. These are hard if not impossible to see just by getting on your knees- you have to get underneath and poke around.

if it is a muffler heat sheild (on both the top and bottom), you sould be able to hit the exhaust with a pole of some sort and hear the same rattle... you dont need to jack it up do try that.
