trying to help my grandad fix his j30 up a little and the issue im currently facing is the rear windows will not go up or down whe the switches are hit they make a noise as if the motor is trying to do something but wont i do stuff similar to this for a living as far as messing around with door panels etc so if anyone has any suggestions for what i should examine first to figure out what might be wrong instead of me going in not knowing exactly what might be messed up that would be very helpful.

sounds like the window motor or the window regulator are shot!
You should remove the door panel....see if the motor is getting 12v, which it sounds like it is....
see if the motor is binding...most of the time there is a plastic gear in the window motor that breaks....the plastic gear is non-replaceable..need to replace the motor...
but it might be the regulator and it's cables are fouled up...which you would replace only the regulator....
