I changed the air filter on my car and it started running rough. So I checked it out and reinstalled it and the car ran better. But then it started stalling and running rough when we came to a stop. You could also smell some heavy exhaust.I took the car in and they replaced the egr valve.I drove away and low and beholdthe carwas still stalling when we came to a stop, also there was some black smoke?Today they replaces a coollant sensor? and guess what still stalling out.Someone said it may be the distributor cap so I fiddled with the wires and it ran better, stalling only twice in a half hour as opposed to every stop.Could this be somewhere for them to at next?? thank you mbarber

Sounds like it might be a bad MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensor, or it might be a bad IAT (Intake Air Temp.) sensor.

IAT wont kill it. but defoinitly if it only happened after dooing the air filter I would say maf connector might be the problem. The distributor thing is when it fills with oil inside you check that by removing the cap the the rotor and finally the metal cover below the rotor when you pull that off if it pours oil out the distributor internal seal is bad and you need to replace the distrbutor. check the MAF first though. more likley in your case.

MAF..I agree that the IAT sensor will not make the car stall.

your best bet would be to try to start where you have had the most luck, the dist. check for cracks around the base of the cap where the screws are if its cracked your cap moves causing a krappy idle and yes stalling, for $15 it cant hurt to replace it
