ok my car has 189k miles on it, alot? yes alot. I just bought the car, its in pretty good condition, but the guy sold it to me without letting me know the timeing chain is bad. he had some straight 40 oil in there so i didnt hear the problem till a week later when i changed the oil. ive been doing some research and i found its gonna be expencive to get it fixed, and im wondering if i need to spend the money to get it fixed, or if i can roll with this time chain for awhile longer. Its just makeing a rattleing noise, it could just be the tensioner but i dont know.

any suggestions?

Depends on how long the chain has been rattling. You can sort of tell the condition by the sound, if it rattles all the time and sounds pretty nasty I would look into changing it quickly.

Also, some people have said that they could only go 5000 miles before the chain broke, others have gone 50000, frankly it all depends on the condition of the motor. Given the high mileage I bet its been making that sound for a while, so I would at least look under the valve cover to see if it is eating through the metal yet or if you still have guides. Thats about the only thing you can do without spending money at this point.

true...

my professional advice to to fix it asap due to the possibility of the chain breaking. then things get out of hand.

my personal advice is to evaluate how much money you have tied up in the car now and how loud/consistant the noise is. if you feel like a pretty competent mechanic, you could do the job yourself in two weekends.

yeah, get your brakes fixed. a set of brake pads is cheap. in the meantime keep your oil clean and topped up.

It may be your upper chain guide. I think I remember Nissan sending out a service memo concerning the upper chain guide - they said it was deemed useless and it can safely be removed. Alot of people say that that was the cause of their rattling underhood. Also, on the subject of changing the timing chain, if its just the upper timing chain, it'd be no problem for you to do yourself. But from the sounds of it, this isn't the case. (All thats left of my upper chain guide is a broken piece of metal still attached to the head. I'd like to know if the previous owner had it pulled out when it broke off, or its still deep inside my engine. Ohwell)
