93 240sx idling and other problems

my car wouldnt start when i got it but now itt does but the idle surges from 750-1500 or so.. when it doesnt surge the idle will go to 250-500rpm and when i go to give it gas it dies. the exaust smeels strong and when i opened the hood with it running the fumes made my eyes water.

I dont know what is wrong but I would unplug the air injection valve at the air filter and clean the Idle air control valve. Also, unplug the o2 sensor to see if that improves things. Check ground. The idle is supposed to be high when engine is cold. temp sensor and maf should be checked as well.

My car had the same problem Ky240... Right now its at the mechanics getting set up... the IACV is all messed up mine would idle to 700 drop to 300 then up to 5 then down to 2 and die all while the car stood there in positition. So stupid sometimes for 2 weeks ive been working on it and working on it so finally i gave up and took it to the mechanic today when i got there he said i had to leave my car there cuz hes gonna get "Hands On" and get it all sorted out for me... Hopefully i get my baby back soon with little cost...

I dont like having my car someplace other then in my hands specially since i paid for it it belongs to me and the damn thing didnt work :S or did for a while then got worse lol...

But all i can suggest is take it in and have it looked at... best way to do it... on the net there are alotta people who know what they are doing and can show you how to fix it the only problem is if your someone like me who has no idea what parts on a car are and know very little about what anything is... you'll be lost.

well i looked at it and my egr is not on there and i seen no IACV. anyone have pictures of the iacv and where do both go also itll run with the MAF unplugged but won't with it hooked up...now it will take gas until 2500 rpm but then its like hitting a rev limiter or something.

there are pics at the end of second thread. It doesnt run with maf connected? that sounds significant. Maybe pose this question in online mechanic and 240sx general.

the factory service manual tells you how to test maf. see my signature for fsm. or do a search for maf.

The car's computer enters fail-safe mode when maf is disconected or the computer decides maf is not functioning. The computer makes adjustments to allow car to run but wont allow the rpm to exceed 2400.

Yeah I am also back to square one... 3 nights ago took the car out to get some food... noticed the idle drop from 1000 to like 500 when I shifted from reverse into first... kinda tripped me out cuz I thought i was clear of it... so... I guess cleaning it out didnt help for 2 long and now its slowly starting to get worse...
