Hello all,

I'm working on a friends s13 redtop sr20DET and we're trying to dial it in. Here are the basics of the build:
Stock 370 injectors, greddy FMIC (i believe the LS kit), greddy BOV vented to atmosphere, stock turbo, 3" down pipe and full exhaust at 3" out, megasquirt mspnp2 nissan 240 ECU using Tuner Studio, z32 MAF which is currently turned off in the tune. Car was a stock automatic now manual, clutch and transmission work fine.

Onto the problem, car doesn't run very well and seems to pour a ton of smoke out of exhaust, but the turbo sat for twenty years so the oil seals may be bad. Timing is about 100 degrees advanced according to the timing light, not sure how the car runs like this. The irony is the toothed wheel #1 degree offset is at 111 degrees but this is the only way the car runs halfway decent. If i change it, i can move it to even just 1 degree and the car will run but timing mark will be about the same distance out.
Does this mean i have to pull the valve cover and re-dump the CAS (distributor) to align with 0 degrees top dead center? I saw a video where the two marks line up on the CAS as you dump it. Trigger wheel sync window is about 30 degrees off when crank is top dead center on either stroke compression or exhaust.

Any help is appreciated !

If you haven't already figured this one out, yes, you'll want to pull the VC and reset everything to OEM specs (also, factory damper or aftermarket?)

100* seems way, way off. My guess is either something got overlooked on assembly, or the balancer / damper is failing (I've seen the outer ring move relative to the crank snout).

So we pulled the CAS lined up the two marks and re-installed. Then took out the megasquirt mspnp2 nj8994 box and got timing within a few degrees of perfect.

However, now the car barely runs but can be throttled to keep it alive. We may have fried a coil over plug or two with the aftermarket ECU trying to get it dialed in.

Any idea as to why/how the tuning settings could be so far off on Tuner Studio using their base tune file? We also flipped the tooth wheel about 4 times just to make sure we weren't totally insane. All that did was put the timing 100 degrees off in either direction? Just doesn't make sense. Now we gotta figure out what we burned up trying to get the aftermarket ECU to work.
