93,240 sx AUTO Transmission shift problems

:thinker I have a problem . I have a 1993 240 sx with a auto trans in it . The trans takes a while to shift out of first gear, I have to really rev it up to get it to shift , WHAT COULD THIS BE ? do these cars have a external modulator and is this trans shifting powered by vacuum ? any assistance would help, Once the car finally shifts out of first its fine , but I cant drive it like this , I dont want to hurt my Trans.
