93 240 Smoking problem

I have a 93 240 with a ka when i start the car there is a rattiling noise that sounds like it is coming from the lifters and way when i intialy take off there is a smoke clound coming out of my exhaust. also when i park there is black soot on my raer bumper.

What color is the cloud of smoke?

The soot may mean you are running rich.

If you know how to, take out your plugs and tell us what the tips look like.

the soot is black and the smoke is a light grey

look at it closely in the light and see if it is blueish or whiteish or stinks really bad.

How bout if the smoke burns your eyes and the plugs are dry almost burnt looking, what does that mean?

hmm sounds like the same problem im havin.... and i JUST rebuilt my entire bottom end and head.... some think its a rich condition....

the smoke is white and grey. i still have not had a chance to check out the plugs because i have been busy with the alt. problems Also it was smoking real bad when is was low on oil so i put a quart in and the smoking stop except when the car is stopped for a min. or two and then i begin to take off.

Has the car been parked for a while or did you just get it?

When I got mine the woman before me babied it and when I drove it hard it would smoke because it was burning all the carbon off.

no I have been driving it for about a year now. I changed the spark plugs normal and the air filter normal Fuel filter was changed also and still a little grey and white smoke comes out the exhaust upon take off.

Sounds like the engine is running lean. I would replace the oxygen sensor, then check the Throttle position sensor by wiggling the wires going into it and listening for a "click" noise. If the smoke hurts your eyes, it could be a bad catalytic convertor, but i think that since your plugs look burnt, your air/fuel mix is off.

Before you do any of this, take the car to a mechanic and ask him to test the coolant to see if there is any oil in it. That will tell us for sure.

OK no oil in the radiator and no water in the oil checked spark plugs tip is white with carbon build up normal but firing a little hot.what about the idle control valve.

There are two.

Both are a real pain in the butt to get to. The IAC valve is up against the firewall side of the intake plenum, the Air regulator is under the intake runners and has to be replaced by taking the intake manifold off.

There should be a grey plug that you can test their electrical operation on the front side above the throttle body a few inches. I can e-mail a pic of it if you'd like.
