Hey guys I'm having some automatic transmission problems. I had just bought a 93 240sx se convertible and on my way home not even 20 mins in the transmission started having problems....

When i test drove it, it shifted perfect....around the same time the transmission started having problems my lower radiator hose split don't know which one occured first guessing the hose.....well i replaced the hose but the transmission is still having problems I didnt drive to far once the transmission started acting maybe a mile or 2 then i pulled over and fixed the hose....and drove it home bout another 5 miles maybe....

Now the transmission is still messed up from what i can tell it shifts from 1st to third because i manually was shifting and i went from first to second and nothing then once i put it into drive it shifted not really sure if its third cause when i down shift to second nothing happens but when i go to first it down shifts and has a bit of leeway when giving it gas before the gear starts to pull when releasing the gas and giving it gas again another weird thing i noticed was when the rpms are getting higher my temperature gauge starts dropping it hits cold then the transmission shifts usually very erratic shifting times sometimes it will do it at 3k lil hard and usually its between 4-5k

I read the forum about the rev sensor and all that i pulled it and nothing changed....

any ideas anyone ?

When the hose ripped did the car overheat? That could overheat the trans fluid and cause transmission problems.

Try changing the fluid and hopefully it will be fine again. As for the temp gauge going down, you may need a new thermostat. That happened in my Volvo and it demolished my transmission. Hopefully that is of some help.

Yea i checked the posts on the topic prior the 3 plugs kinda attached to the back of the fuse box read some stuff unplugged the top 1 nothing changed.

Unplugged the second one with the top one plugged in still nothing im having a very curious thought though i was just reading up on some stuff bout how my temp gauge drops and i saw a pic the hose that ripped is right by it so it might have soaked the sensor and it shorted maybe has to dry out

Do you think a faulty coolant temp gauge would cause transmission problems?

My brother's convertible had what we think was a bad torque converter. The transmission would operate just fine when it was cold. You'd start it up and it would shift fine, hold power fine, etc... But by the end of the driveway it would start to slip, then wouldn't shift or anything.

Does it hold power in 1st gear? Then doesn't want to shift to 3rd gear or something?

Not sure how you feel about a manual transmission, but most of us would tell you that rather than spending money on maintenance on the auto trans, you'd be better off putting that money toward a 5 spd swap.

By the way... If I had problems with a car on the way home from purchasing it, I'd go back to the seller and have a little talk.

I drove it back from Millersville, which is about 50 miles away from my house, like that, because it was 5 degrees outside and I thought my new intake was just cooling down the motor really well . I didn't know what I know now.

Volvo 850 transmissions are notorious for being unreliable though too. It also blew the headgasket or something did around that same time.

It is possible for it to be a torque converter, but first your fluild should be light pink, check it, smell it, look for fragment of metal. if its brown or even dark red and smells burnt you could be looking at a rebuild or 5 speed swap
