Tried to start up this morning. Starter spins freely, won't engage motor. Any ideas? Sorry, tried search, but not working today.

Thx!

Check out this thread - although I doubt your weather has been cold enough...

The really bad news is that your engine may have jumped time (bad guides). I would say do a search, but if it's not working - check out the bad news here.

Fly me out there and I'll be happy to take a look at it! We took a trip there back in August for our honeymoon at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel and absolutely fell in love with the Big Island. We spent a week in a rental car (like every other tourist) and went to the Hilo side two or three times... it's amazing how beautiful it all is. Only place I've ever been that I almost cried when I had to get back on the plane.

Thanks for the reply, Heath! (wow, I feel so priviledged to get a reply from one of the NICO gods - no, I'm not being sarcastic!))

I should've been more specific. The starter spins, but the motor doesn't crank. Sounds like the starter gear won't engage the flywheel. There's no grinding noise, so either the flywheel is totally cracked or worn so the starter can't even catch any teeth (not likely) or the starter mechanism that engages and disengages the flywheel is stuck in the disengage position. I've heard old time mechanics use a hammer to get it going again. I was hoping for a more permanent/easier fix, rather than a replacement. oh well...(my mechanic's 40 miles away!)

Hey Heath! Anytime you're back here, give me a call. I'll take you in a ride in a Hawaiian Q45... uh, make that a Hawaiian Highlander. Thanks!

had the same problem a month or so ago....try turning the crank bolt to a point where the pulley turns about a half way to the right. Make sure to hold the belt so it does not come off of the pulley...

once i did this, the car started right up but when i pulled the starter...it seemed ok; yet, the teeth on the flywheel were jarred....so i plan on changing out the flywheel with a known good one.

Starter problems are pretty rare, but not unheard of... I would try tapping it with something just to see if it changes anything. At least you'd know if that's the problem...
