Hi,I have been reading hours of Q45 postings and found several that affects one of my Q's. Thanks a lot for NICO! I too have Bose front speakers that are gone. The popping/crackin noise from the right side is so bad I cant enjoy sound from the back speakers - which are still good.

This all happened when I had a garage put in a new/rebuilt altenator. When the car came back, my A/C was leaking and my radio was popping and squealing like a home security alarm. When I complained the shop offered to "see what's going on" but claimed no responsibility. Lesson learned!!

I think the Bose Rear Recall wont help me, but I need to take the front one out to have Bose repair (fee). Right? My question is about taking them out. A How-To postings says "slide the arm rest out". How do I do that? It was not obvious to me when I started. It is tight with no screws. Can i break it if I don't slide it right? Does it slide forward, backward, up/down?

I'm getting a $958 A/C evaporator/drier/retro kit job tomorrow and want to get my (wife's) audio back as soon as possible. Thanks a million.

Yikes, no responsibility? I could maybe let them slide iwth the audio, but not the AC.. thats not something that just conveinetly decides to leak... I bet they sliced the low pressure line somehow.. its right there by the alternator.....

Anyway, if it were me personally, id skip rebuilding the bose and go aftermarket..... You can get a setup that uses the factory HU, just with an aftermarket amplifier and speakers. Even a medocre system will cost less and sound better than the bose in the 90-93 Q.

What's an "AC retro kit job"? One of those things that hangs out the window loaded with ice?

If it is a conversion to R134a, you need to do some more reading because everything need to be changed for it to function properly.

Maxnix is absolutely right! Hold off on converting to 134A unless you're willing to replace everything!

As far as the radio stuff, I don't think it's related to your alternator... check out this link for removal:

OOPS!!! I gooofed! By the time I saw Heath & Brian's posts last night, I had already left my car for A/C fix, including the R132a conversion. When I called this morning the job was already inprogress. I did have enough info thanks to NICO posts to ask some intelligent questions and it looks like they did most of the right things your guys mentioned. This is what I got: New evaporator, Drier, Expansion Valve, Seal kit and O-Rings. They vacuumed out the R12 (had very little; not enough to turn on unit), but the oil they used is "ASTRO" oil. I didn't see Astro Oil mentioned any NICO post. Now, I just hope I'll be OK.

As for the Bose Speakers, Wes and others have convinced me to scrap getting them fixed. Thanks Guys for the post showing me how to get them out, which I will do tomrrow.

Do new compatible speaks and amps just plug in where the factory Bose are now? Or - if i buy a whole new HU (w/CD this time) and speakers - will I be able to use the car's factory wiring?

Thanks, Frank

For the audio system you can get harnesses that allow you to do what your talking about.... And yes you can use the factory wiring...

Crutchfield sells these things... You can use an aftermarket HU if you want.. I ran an aftermarket HU with the bose and it worked ok... i ended up switching back to the stock HU because I got sick of looking at the freaking light show, was a little too much action for the interior of the Q...

I have a post about taht somewhere, what I bought and such with pics.. Youd do exactly the same thing pretty much.

OK, thanks for helping me resolve this one:

I have ordered the Clarion six CD from Joe which will be shipped Friday along with other parts. I will add it to my 95Q stock Bose system. I have taken out the two front Bose speakers from the 92Q (crackin, popping). The amps were blown. The back speakers work just fine.

When I finish all the mechanical repairs on the the two Q's, I will replace the Bose HU and all 4 speakers with a non-Bose system. Right now, I'm $2200 in Q work, and counting, so I'm putting all remaining funds into repairs.

BTW, the A/C is now blowing C-o-l-d air again. Thanks for NICO comments.Frank
