I broke down and took my 240 to a local mechanic. He stated that it's running rich because there is no thermostat in it and it is still in warmup mode. He suggested a 192 degree thermostat but the book calls for a 170. What is correct?

Put the one in that matches the car's design. If something were to happen, say a busted rad hose on the freeway, you don't want to be 22* closer to an overheat with an aluminum engine.Plus the car probably has protection programmed in that will retard the spark timing if you get much past 170*.

Forgive me for not knowing, but to clear things up...running rich=too much gas? and lean=?? I replaced my thermostat with a 170 degree and I also replaced my fuel filter and my 91 240sx will run fine then after say a good 5-10 mins it will bog down to the point of cutting the car off and I smell gas (see my topic on replaced fuel filter 91 240sx), I was thinking maybe it now has something to do with my thermostat as seeing this post maybe the new thermo i have is not working right?? I DK. Thanks for any help

My main thing I was thinking on this post was how can your thermostat cause you to run rich?
