First off I am new to the forum! I am glad I found this place!

I've got a '92 Stanza that I just took to the shop today because it felt like the transmission was slipping. The mechanic looked it over and adjusted the tension on timing chain and said that was the problem. Indeed the car drove and idled much better after that...no more shifting issues or that loss of power feeling.

He did tell me that it was going to cost almost $2,000 to replace the timing chaing and tensioners. etc. He said the parts were almost seven hundred dollars and that it would require him to drop the motor or take it almost all the way apart. The labor charge was $1200. To me, this seems way to high.

Can anyone weigh in and let me know if this sounds right or how difficult it actually is to do this work? I've never paid that much for a car repair my entire life (and I am almost 40) and that includes when I went to Aamco to get my transmission fixed .

costs for timing chain and the replacement fee itself is outrageous these days. but if it can't be reached with the motor in then he would have to drop the motor out. thats a really big job. he's probably in the ballpark by my guess.

Stanza's are notorious for the timing chain tensioner breaking because it is plastic. I got a complete timing set with pulley and tensioner for like 65 dollars on ebay and it works great. I got a friend to install it for 250 dollars so i barely spent over 300. Try to find a mechanic that will do the work on the side. If you find a good one you can save a lot of money.
