Jack up the front of the car and grab the wheel at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock postions and shake side to side (this checks tie-rods), noting play.
Next, grab at the 4-5 o'clock location, placing 1 hand on the outside and 1 on the inside of the wheel and pull in and out (this checks the ball joint), noting play.
Next, grab the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock locations and push top foward and pull bottom out, switching between pushing and pulling top to bottom (checks wheel bearing), noting play.
Next, go under the car check control arm bushing, tension rod bushings, etc. for wear or seperation. Also, randomly grab and shake and pull on things to see if they are loose.
Good luck,
