I haven't had any problems but would love to know how many miles the bearings last. I am at 122K and just wondering when to consider having them looked at, or do they not need it???

ThanksKen K

Just check them when you change rotors or rotate tires.

How long things last depends on tires and roads [edge roughness] and driving style.

I've replaced all 4 wheel bearings some lasted 150k [9 years] and some 220k [11-12 years].

The above was with oem 15" wheels and Michelin tires, heavier wheels and tires seem to accelerate the failure time.

Thanks, q45tech

That gives me a good guideline. Most of my driving is highway and I have stock wheels with Michelins.

How does one recognize when the bearings are going? Do the bearings need any interim maintenance?

Thanks,Ken K

Check for roughness and noise when roatating by hand. Best with tires off as they tend to dampen imperfections.

Bet the FSM has specifications and procedures for measuring play. Just best to replace if there is any indication of play.

Hey, I would be happy to change them out if someone said that the front bearings go out at x miles and the rear at y miles.

So, what I hear is that "check on them when brakes/rotors are worked on, change them out when they show wear, and they don't need any service between birth and death." Is that correct?

Usually they make more noise when they are on their last legs... For instance, your RF wheel bearing might squeal, and get louder when you make left turns.

You periodically listen with a stethoscope and probe while on lift and rear turning [in drive] for the telltale crunching, whirring, and popping sounds at the rear of bearing/hub.

For the front you have your assist spin the wheels.......test straight ahead and separate tests for turned to extremes both directions!

Same with all rotating components [idler pullies, ac, alternator, ps, front crank bearing, differential, half shafts] you listen for wear sounds.

Sounds good to me. I haven't had a good use for my stethescope since I became a radiologist 20 years ago, but I kept it around...

Automotive ones tend to be like a tuning fork with a long extension to rest against suspect area.

Has anyone ever replaced them with non-oem parts?
