You periodically listen with a stethoscope and probe while on lift and rear turning [in drive] for the telltale crunching, whirring, and popping sounds at the rear of bearing/hub.
For the front you have your assist spin the wheels.......test straight ahead and separate tests for turned to extremes both directions!
Same with all rotating components [idler pullies, ac, alternator, ps, front crank bearing, differential, half shafts] you listen for wear sounds.
