I don't know if this symptom will sound familar to anyone, I've done a search and with all the transmission problems, this is one that I'm not coming up with.

The best way I could explain it is if your driving a stick shift and push in the clutch slightly and slowly reengage. It doesn't feel like a downshift, its more of a disconnect from the engine. It happens for maybe two or three seconds, quick enough that once I notice it happening, it reengages. It started happening a couple months ago but is starting to happen more frequently. And it tends to occur only at highway speeds, maybe 45 and up. I've taken it out of D and tried it just in 3rd, no difference.

The car has 144,000 miles, second transmission at 67,000. Its had a flush every 30,000 miles. I just brought it down and had the screen replaced, full fluid exchange with Mobil1 Synthetic at a cost of $250. It made no difference with this symtom although it does tend to shift better.

Any thoughts?

Not wanting to go into gear is usually a sign of transmission failing???

Sounds like you've done the right thing with pan drop and Mobil 1 ATF... only other thing I can recommend in an external tranmission cooler (about $100) -- unless you're in a very cold climate. (Where are you?)

But transmission cooler won't fix anything, just prevent further heat-related damage.

Heat kills Q45 transmissions.

(1/2 bottle of Lubeguard Black transmission additive (at NAPA only) got rid of some shudder in my '92 Q transmission.)

Thanks for the comments. It is strange in that it doesn't feel as though its slipping, its feels more like its disengaging and reengaging. For an experiment, on the way home a drove at 60mph and without changing the position of my gas pedal foot, I slipped it into neutral and back into Drive. The RPM went from 2000 up to 3500 and back to 2000 when I put it back into gear. This is exactly how it is behaving.

I'm located near Grand Rapids MI. When I went to Georgia a couple years ago to get my chain guides done, I discussed the cooler w/Dennis and it was agreed I live far enough north with three or four months of warm weather that it might do more harm that good being that it is also the radiator that warms the transmission fluid quicker for cold weather driving.

I'm beginning to feel that this is not the common failure mode for this transmission.

at the start of your post i thought i might be having the same symptoms but maybe not. when i'm going at highway speeds 45 to 70 i feel a very slight "shudder" or very slight hesitation or surge, yea i know, all over the place with that description, but it's hard to describe. the tack doesn't move at all which is why i'm questioning whether it's the transmission. anyone have any thoughts on what i should be looking for?? i'm from pa,,,anywhere from very hot to very cold,,,,trans cooler or not???? jeff
