When I try to play a tape in my car the tape deck lights up but I can't get any sound. The play arrow lights up and also the "MTL" indicator lights up. Any suggestions.

Thanks

Can you hear the heads engaging when you press play or is it completely silent?

If that's the case, drive belts may be busted.

If you can't get that one fixed, I've got a HU from a '92 for $50 + shipping (or local pick-up, I'm in Chicago). Let me know.

I can hear some whirring when the tape is in. I hear the tape load then the whirring. Tape must be moving because when I take it out the reels have moved.

Hmm, it is possible,/probable that the read head is either dirty, or has gone bad. Try a cleaning tape in there. Or possibly a short burst of compressed air.
