Hello everyone

what a great site this is. breaking my cherry here, as this is my first time.

one question for the master mechanic online:

my q runs fine, but it runs a bit high when first started in the morning and it calms down when warmed up a bit.

also, it has a slight vibration when staying in gear at idle for a while. then it disappears when put in neutral.

should i be worried? guides and trans have been replaced at 84k and it now has 115k.

could it be the infamous motor mounts? or what?i want this baby to purrr with complete silence.

any ideas?

JS

The idle speed EXACTNESS is important to vibration free idle! The tachometer is in accurate [must use Consult to set idle speed at 650-675 rpm the warmed up neutral [725] vs in drive speed should not drop more than 50 rpm.

Cleanliness of throttle body/plate and IAC dirt and misadjustment, dirty fuel injectors are the typical causes take it to an expert...........never allow an independent who is not a Q expert to touch any engine controls. They always try and end up screwing something up ....[there are 3 adjustments that are sealed and marked with white paint.....not to be adjusted ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you sure it's not just the normal warm-up cycle? It's supposed to idle high until it warms up. Then you should see it at about 600 RPM.

The vibrations you feel may be motor mounts, transmission mounts, or exhaust hangers. If they've never been replaced before, it's time. I'd replace the exhaust hangers and transmission mount first. Then go for motor mounts as a last resort (lot's more labor).

Your nearest nationally-recognized older Q Guru is Jerry Tucker in San Diego assuming you're in Hollywood CA. Your local dealer should be able to complete the injector flush and plenum/throtle body cleaning, but there's a very wide variance in how dealer service departments work.

Welcome to NICO!

thanks gentlemen for your input.

i will look into that. also, was there any factory recall on this model besides speakers and seatbelts?

For some repairs you can also take your car to Z Expert in Marina Del Rey. Richard is the owner and has been in business for 20+ years. He works on all my cars, I used to live in LA and now live in the Bay Area and he gets my Maxima and Z cars every once in a while to do the major stuff. He is getting up to speed on Q's and will NOT do anything he doesn't feel comfortable doing and will do a very good fair job on everything else. Brakes, tune-ups, that kind of stuff he's great for. Call him up 310-574-0699 and tell him Jeff Leeds sent you.
