I start the beast and drive it to the end of the street... rpms go to about 1000 and stay up there instead of dropping down... if I don't put the car in neutral at the stop sign it will stall,, after I put it in neutral there rpms drop to 650 and it is ok the rest of the day... strange... eh,,, I have cleaned the MAF,, but maybe it is going bad...,, also have to fight getting the key out of the ignition every time I drive the car... with 166,000 it still runs strong.. and I love it.

Try posting in Infiniti Online Mechanic.

Don't see what's so unusual if your car is not warmed to operating temperature before driving.

Maybe a little more detail of the problem including recent maintenance history would help.

How are the chain guides?

Thanks for the advice,,, I have new plugs and a fuel filter to install,, guides are in the future,, I have cleaned the throttle body and system with sea foam through the vaccum hoses, and sprayed it with carb cleaner. What is the IAC ?? ,,, what it acts like is the torque converter locking up and stalling when it is cold,,, but that may be because of the faster idle during that time. What I cannot believe is how fast the car runs even with the high mileage... the biggest annoience is the sticking key in the ignition. ,,, I have remove the plastic around the lock and jiggle the key while holding the release button to get the key out.. quite a production.

Take care...

IAC = Idle air control. This gets plugged sometimes and causes this problem. It's on the back of the plenum with 3 or 4 10mm bolts and a couple hoses, remove and clean with carb cleaner (it has gaskets so be careful). There is a dime sized? threaded hole with a slotted "plug" on the top side that needs to be adjusted 2.5 - 3 turns from the bottom. This adj might take a few tries to get right, and don't try adjusting until you clean it first! It kept happening to me and many others, and this fixed it.

Make sure the throttle body (TB) is really clean, clean the butterfly and as far as you can reach in with a toothbrush, don't get too much cleaner inside or it will flood and turn into a real beyotch to start. Throttle response will improve without all the black crap in the way.

Remove the EGR valve from the drivers side of the plenum, and scrape out all the gunk (I bet you'll be surprised ) do this at the same time as you clean the TB to get any chunks from falling in. Remove the EGR tube from the ex. man. and clean it too.

This should be a good start on you probs....

Put graphite in your ign lock too, probably worn tumblers...

Good luck! Let us know if this does it please.

Assuming there is one.

Do lots of reading before you even start the car again. The next crank could be that engines last.

Seafoam is never recommended as it is too caustic.
