Hi all! I am a first time poster. I am nuts about my Q & really love driving the beast. My question is this:The fuel pump has been noisy for a long time now; a loud steady hum. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop...but it doesn't. It's got that Everready Bunny syndrome; it just keeps going. Is this common on the older Q's? It is pretty high mileage at 182K. I have changed the fuel filter & the hum did not decrease. Should I be worried & how involved a job is it? I'm not much of a mechanic, but can struggle thru... Any info would be appreciated....... Hi and welcome to NICO,

You'll enjoy all the information you'll ever need about keeping your Q in tip-top shape. When you get a chance, tell us a little bit more about your Q and post some pics if you can.

The most important thing for you to do is to read all the old posts in the Infiniti General and Infiniti Online Mechanic sections. There is a plethora of information here.

On to your problem: I recommend you replace the pump now or soon. The reason is that the pump is only 250-300 dollars for the part BUT, if you wait too long the failing pump could ruin the fuel pump controller which is another 500 bucks. For example, Dennis (Q45Tech) has 251,000 miles on his Q and has never replaced the controller, but he has replaced 3 fuel pumps. As far as repairs go, it is not extremely difficult to do.

You should get a Factory Service Manual. Some members have one or two for sale. There are always one's available on Ebay (don't get the CD's...they suck), and you could always call Joe at Infiniti of Scottsdale (http://www.infinitipartsusa.net) for one but that will cost you 120 bucks.

Welcome and good luck to you,

Nick

One other thing you might want to have checked is the fuel pressure regulator, make sure they have vacuum when the engine is at idle speed and the hoses are attached and not cracked or leaking vacuum. Rare, but have seen an occasion where this can cause the pressure to boost at idle speed along with a slight fuel pump hum! Just another suggestion.

Now, about your timing chain guides. They have been replaced, right?
