(I have looked ITFM) 1992 Q45 with the Sony CD trunk mounted kit. Sudden loss of access and cannot switch to the tape or the center console mounted control for the trunk-mounted CD player. (the trunk mounted Sony CD changer has power and will load and eject the 10-CD cartridge).

I could not find anything in the manual on pages EL100 and following, probably because it is a Sony kit made for Infiniti and added later, I believe.

I vaguely recall a similar problem reported here in the past which was the result of failure of a relay that switches between the radio, CD and tape. I have no idea where the relay is located or what the part number is. A quick check of the fuses showed none blown but there were lots to pull and I confess to not pulling all.

If anyone can confirm whether my suspicions MIGHT be well-founded, provide a part number (the parts guy at Infiniti in Fresno said that he only could find an "audio relay" but wasn't sure if that was the correct part), and tell me whether this is something that I or a non-Infiniti mechanic could easily get to, I would be VERY grateful. After Infiniti would not replace a warranteed Infiniti re-manufactured transmission replacement that failed at 15K miles, I have not been very keen to patronize them.

ThanksKen Krone

My guess is whatever failed (relay, circuit, etc) is within the head unit and probably doesn't have an Inf Part #.

My suggestion would be to find a replacement HU on ebay. Should be able to get one fairly cheap since it doens't ahve the in dash cd.

I'd also consider calling Inf national customer service or asking the local dealership for their regional manager regarding the transmission.

Thanks for the info. Where do I find info about where the head unit lives and looks like, how to get at it, and what its part number is? I don't see a reference to it in the little gray service manual.

Thanks,

Ken K

"Head Unit" is another term for the radio... The head unit switches over to the CD by a 12V signal from the CD changer to a pin on the 5 Pin DIN input on the back of the radio. Might be worth disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to see if it resets anything.

Thanks. I will disconnect the battery in the AM and report back.
