Check your fluid level and condition. If it's not pink/red and smells like normal transmission fluid (not burnt), try a drain & fill (or pan drop + filter/gasket change if you're up for that). But if you don't have an auxiliary transmission cooler replacing the stock one, the stock cooler probably clogged and possibly caused the death of your transmission. The stock cooler for the auto trans of WD21s is prone to clogging.

Try checking the interconnect between transmission control handle, shifter and transmission actuator

Thanks guys....just got back from having it towed home...fluid level was good and red/pink like normal. We put it in park and verified it does not roll free in any of the gears and locks like it should? I will try to research and try to check the things listed by ark. Further elaboration and any other info is greatly appreciated! I am pretty comfy working on the engine but do not know much about the trans. Tow truck operator said it almost seemed like the linkage but linkage is attached, he said maybe in the bell housing? I cant afford a trans right now so my fingers are crossed that thats not the issue or i screwed!

When it happened it felt to me like a spline/spring popping noise for a split second on acceleration and then no gears. When in gear it does not attempt to engage or move but an ever so light loose rattling, like whatever popped is maybe hanging free???

Almost feels like a manual when the clutch goes out...

Unfortunately, I believe you have stripped the splines on the output shaft of the trans. Not the splines that engage with the transfer case, but the splines that engage with the carrier in the trans.(same shaft). I had this happen to me once and it sounds like something whirring around in your trans. I got on it one time pretty hard and bang that was it. The actual replacement of the shaft is a little tricky, but the main obstacle is removing that ungodly trans. Trans shops carry the shaft used for like ten bucks.

Thanks everyone...the whirring noise seems to be coming from the very back of the trany closest to the engine. light whirring noise with an occasional peck like something hanging and occasionally touching flywheel??? Does anyone have a breakdown of the trans or knows where I can find one on here or elsewhere? Again, thanks guys your the best :mike !

Is it possibly the torque converter? Does anyone know what the symptoms of TC going out would be?

It does sound as if the TC has let go. The TC is basically a sealed vessel with vanes to allow torque build up through hydraulic fluid action. The TC is attached to the output shaft of the engine and acts like a clutch at slow RPM like idle. If the shaft is spinning on the motor but not on the converter a whirring sound will be emitted as steel is rubbing steel.

Remove transmission oil cover after draining oil then you will see the converter at the front of the transmission a big round sphere with a plug to remove/install oil, or it is integral with mounting the converter.

See if it turns by hand? Is it free moving or is it still attached?

Let us know.
