Questions from a newbie, so excuse me if they are dumb:

I just bought a 92 Pathfinder. It leaks oil like crazy. Big puddle under the truck after it runs. I would like to fix this. The previous owner said it was the Rear Main Seal. It appears to be this based on my observations underneath. I am sure the engine or transmission or both needs to come out to do this. While it is out I plan to do a total re-seal, i.e. oil pan, valve covers, etc, maybe even timing belt. How difficult is this to do? I have some experience in removing engines from old Subaru's. It seems like there is less room to work on the Pathfinder. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Chris

You def. need to drop the transmission for the rear main seal.... but i don't know about your other questions. SORRY! a great resource for your year pathfinder is the board at http://npora.ipbhost.com I even copied your text and made a topic there, so by the time you read this there should hopefully be replies.

you need to pull the transmission, clutch and flywheel to get at the engine seal. once it's exposed carefully pry the seal out with a screwdriver. Make sure not to gouge the block!! Once the old seal is out lube up your new seal and line it up. If you have a rubber mallet you can just tap it until it is in. Then just reassemble the transmission and you are done. The oil pan and the valve cover is pretty straight forward.
