92 nissana maxima slow to engage first gear

my maxima will not engage first gear from stand still till I gun it hard then it chirps the tires roughly and takes off. this started after a motor swap, but was working great before that. after it chirps wheels its smooth sailing till the next stop. it does the same thing when pu in reverse. so it basically hesitates to engage gears.
