1. Don't throw parts at a car. It gets expensive and needless spending occurs. Plus you might have to get a new paint job.

2. Have you checked all fluids and everything is normal? New gas in it (gas is good for about 6mos)?

3. The correct forum for this question is to the right of the page labeled : Car Specific Links - Maxima

4. Mods please move.

Welcome to NICO.

Make sure the battery connections are clean and tight. This is a common starting problem, even with new battery. You may also have stale fuel or worse, contaminated fuel. When you replaced the fuel filter, what's the color of the fuel that came out of the tank?

Another possibility is a weak/failing fuel pump (low fuel pressure) or bad fuel pressure regulator (fuel drains back into the tank when engine shuts down). Set ignition switch to ON and listen for fuel pump (in tank, behind rear seat). It should run for @ 5 seconds then shuts down automatically. Then start the car. If the car starts normally, you have a problem with fuel delivery. You need to check the fuel pressure as well as perform leakdown test to isolate the problem.

It would also help us if you could be more descriptive about the hard starting problem.

All of the gas that was in the tank after it sat for the year was already out of the tank. After siting for a year I put a new battery and alternator on it and two rubber gas lines cuz the orginal lines were rusted through and leaking. When I changed the fuel filter the gas was a light brown color. The hard start is like i go to start the car and have to kepp cranking it with my foot on the pedal, then after it starts I have two rev the engine to two thousand rpm. Then when i drive it ifeels like its boging or has a miss to it. Now i change the plugs and wires because it sat for so long of a time. BUt it ran fine after i put the plug and wires on it, then when we had the last rely bad freeze in northeast ohio thats when the car had a hard time starting and has been the same ever since.

Your fuel tank is probably corroded. Gasoline is typically clear in color and never reddish/brownish. The latter is an indication of corrosion. Contaminated fuel will cause your engine to stutter and miss. You need to get another sample of gas from the tank. Still, I don't have any explanation as to why the car ran fine for a while after replacing the plugs and wires. As stated earlier, you have to check fuel pressure and do leakdown test plus a spark test.

Make sure the replacement sensor is installed correctly (pushed in all the way). If not, it may not be able to properly pick up the gear rotation. If the sensor and installation are good, then the problem may be in the istrument cluster.

It's probably the cluster itself. Failed clusters in third gens weren't terribly uncommon.
