Hoping you can help.
I have lag at low speed off the line. Then at 75-80mph the trans will not respond as the RPM's rev up to 7k-8k. After letting off the pedal, and the trans downshifts a gear, the transmission re-engages. I've ordered solenoids, and a rebuild kit for the re4r01a. Waiting on parts. In the meantime, anyone experience slipping?
What was your fix?

Swap to a 5 speed. They call it an auto-tragic for a reason.

Besides, you shouldn't go above 7k if you are. In stock form.

^^^^This.
The Z32 AT is a well-known disaster for quite a few reasons, and the most common fix for it is the MT swap...it's actually cheaper in most cases especially if you DIY. I myself had this done for my old NA, the cost for AT replacement would have been over $2K and repeat the previous. So I had the swap done (I supplied a good used 40K miles 93b MT, $450 cost) for $2K out the door, TT clutch included, and my guy ain't cheap.

Thanks for the feedback. My needs have changed.

Does anyone have a diagram for the location of the check-balls? When I opened my valve body, they went everywhere!
My rebuild kit does not include them and therefore does not include instructions for their location.
Help on the AT is most appreciated.

A service manual is MANDATORY for things like that, ATSG sells rebuilder type ones. You also need one for clutch pack assembly clearances, many are absolutely mission critical to get trans performance right and only bumblers simply change the clutch discs and go, it can result in a quick trans DNF. The ATSG will also tend to try to point out error places where the OEM trans seems to commonly fail, and provide fixes for them.

There can be easily 4-5 rebuild kits and all may not have the parts needed, a common ATX problem. With steels, without, with backup pistons, without, with bushings, without, etc.

I too used to yank ATX in a heartbeat to go to MTX, they are so much more fun to drive and show off in. Now though you virtually need a donor car to do switches like that because way more changes there than just the trans or mounts.

I've never worked on the auto in a Z32 but I want to say that all the info you are looking for is available in the FSM, since NICO was ordered to take the material down we no longer host it BUT if you look int he "Everything you need to know" thread in Z32 General you will find a link to an FSM that is still active (hosted outside the country IIRC). Good luck.

That's just another warning about the Z32 AT- It's a PURE PITA and a VERY savvy and competent AT guy I used years ago (Mazda racing guy) famously told me it's one of the worst AT's produced in terms of service and life expectancy, and especially to work on. Add in that Nissan knows nothing about them, and continues to promote service that actually destroys the trans.
The MT swap does away with all of these issues, permanently...
