I was driving home one night on a usual route- literally been this way hundreds of times. Got off the highway, around and down the ramp to the road that runs under. It was a slow but still rolling "stop" taking a right- not slow enough for the trans to shift down into 1st, but shifted right into 2nd with light throttle like it always did and should have. I didn't punch it, but eased into the throttle about 3/4 at about 15 or 20 MPH expecting the downshift into 1st. It did- with a "POW" and seemed to hit a little harder than usual. It shifted as expected at about 5K- into *nothing* (not expected): no 2nd. Backed off the throttle to try and find something- nothing. I rolled as far as I could safely and stopped- then found that I had "a gear" that turned out to be 1st. I was about 3/4 mile from home, so just limped home in 1st. Next day driving around the complex to see what was up, I found I had no reverse, no 2nd, and no OD. If I locked out OD, it would start in 1st and then skip up to 3rd as it should if I backed off the throttle completely when I wanted it to shift. I drove it 25 or 30 miles to my friends place- and parked it. I've started it and moved around a few times- no change.

I haven't found anything unexpected in the fluid. I haven't taken the cover off. I haven't studied the FSM hard enough yet to see what's common between the three gears. The car isn't special, but it's not in bad shape otherwise, cleans up OK, and was a good solid daily driver that I would have driven anywhere- until it wasn't. It would be great if it was something easy enough to fix. I could hunt down and put a trans in it, but would rather let someone else spend the time and take the chance.

Does anyone have a solid clue what the issue could be?

TIA

It's definitely a mechanical failure. Driving around on it any further will just cause more damage. I'd suspect an intermediate shaft or a clutch drum failure.

You're going to be taking it to a transmission shop/dealer or will be rebuilding it yourself.

I've had this happen once on a Ford 4R75E transmission (updated AOD-E/4R70W). Was getting on the highway (gently) and when it shifted to third, it free-revved - no gear. Ended up being a failed direct-clutch drum that was weak by design and just gave out at the snap-ring grooves. I had 1st, 2nd, and Reverse, for a short while longer, but a few miles later they all failed due to debris. A snapped intermediate shaft would give similar/same results and is probably more common to happen during harsh downshifts.

EDIT: Looking at schematics of your transmission, there is no intermediate shaft. I'd still suspect either the low or high clutch drum having failed. Time for a rebuild.
