'92 Maxima Automatic, how do I change the trans fluid?

how do I change the trans fluid in my '92 automatic nissan maxima? All I know is on this model you can only drain the fluid and refill. I looked at the transmission and see what I think is the drain hole. It is a large, about 1/2" or larger, torq/head type bolt. Is this it? And is it true that the fluid has to be pumped out some how? And if so, how? Or will gravity drain it out.

Last but not least, what type of trans fluid? I called the nissan dealer and they said its regual dextron type III fluid. I stopped by a oil change place and they said its synthetic and quoted my $105 plus tax.

I am mechanically competent and feel confident doing this myself.

Non-synth dexron III is fine.

The drain plug is here. It's square drive, so you can just stick an extension on your ratchet and that'll do it.

You have to refill through the dipstick tube, so you'll need a funnel that'll fit in it.

You can get a good portion of the fluid out just by letting gravity do its work, but without a flush some of the old fluid will stay. Depending on your transmission's milage, your driving habits, etc. it might be worth it to have a shop flush it.

thanks for the info. The trans fluid has been changed before so I feel fine doing a drain and refill. I'll do one now and another at the end of winter.

Is that a 1/2" square drive or larger? Do you know the exact size? I'll stop by the store and pick up that size square drive.

Yeah, it's 1/2 inch.
