I've been searching for a while but cant find my exact problem. So I've just recently got my car on the road and it ran fine but always idled fast. Then one day I had a hot start problem, so i searched on here and found that the coolant temp sensor was the probable cause. Got that fixed and then decided maybe my ignition timing was the cause of my fast idle. I retarded it some and with the TPS hooked up it idles fine at around 800-1000. However when I unhook the TPS now my idle shoots up to about 2200. Which makes it nearly impossible to get a read on timing or do anything really. Doesn't matter what i do with the distributor at that time I can retard fully and advance fully with only a maybe 100rpm flux in idle. I've also just tried adjusting the idle screw and that did nothing. When I'm driving it around it does take about 30 secs to come to a 1000rpm idle at stop lights. So here are my questions:

Some info:
Car is a 92 with 199,000. Sat for a year before i put it back on road. Had a dead injector circuit in ECU so it is running on a 93 automatic ECU. Don't really know what the timing is set at right now, it's retarded a little bit from the mark left on the dizzy by years of use.

If I have a vacuum leak is the ECU able to overcome that and make it idle fine when the TPS is hooked up?
Is there anything else I need to know about that could be affecting the idle?

I played with the idle screw and the timing a little more and I have it idling at a perfect 650 rpm but only when the TPS is hooked up. So I'm happy and it's running great, but I would still like to know why my idle jumps up anywhere from 1500-2200 and stays there when the TPS is unhooked. If anyone could answer that it would help me out a great deal.
