I'm going to look at a '92 Q45 as a donor car for a Z32 swap. I planned to use a '94-95 for the oval ports, updated timing chain, etc., but if this car is as-described it's going to be a helluva deal.

If I were to use the '92 engine/harness/ECU just to get everything swapped into the chassis and shaken down, would I have any trouble switching to a 94/95 VH later?

Just to clear things up, the earlier 90-93 engines are the ones with the dual intake ports. I personally like the earlier models due to a few other upgrades they have over the 94-95, but as you're aware you have to update the timing guides.

There have been some posts in the Q forum about this topic. It was advised NOT to do it, but a lot of those guys don't seem to like to think outside the box. I know that some of the connectors on the harness are different. Not sure what else wouldn't "swap over".

Does this Q have TCS? I am so happy that by luck I ended up with a non-TCS engine. So much less stuff to deal with.

If this Q engine is in good shape (and non-TCS, but not the end of the world) buy it and replace the chain guides. Expect about $500 in parts alone for the chain guides if you decide to replace everything.

Haha, I did some searching prior to this post and must've gotten dazed at seeing 'oval' and 'dual' ports so much. I knew that

Can anybody chime in on the specifics of the wiring harness differences?

Most the difference is in revized CAS [94-96] have one larger connector vs 90-93 with a connector and a pigtail with another connector.

90-93 have total separate fail safe CAS systems vs all in one on 94-96.

Thanks Q45Tech. What's the best way to circumvent this while swapping to a later engine? Use the 90-93 CAS or wire in the later connector?

Never done it we always match the engine group to the car year from a future liability and emission standpoint.

The last thing we want is someone saying you put the wrong engine in my car as a future excuse for some owner created problem.

The 94-96 cats are quite different due to stiffer emission requirements and we don't want to chance any minscule difference causing a problem.

We know 90-93 cats out last 94-96 cats so why mix and match?
