I have a '92 S13 and my nephew a '93. My nephew was telling me his car would overheat but he'd rev it to 4k RPM for a few seconds and it would run normal the rest of the drive.I discovered as a matter of improving the way my car runs that it had no thermostat, therefore installed one.Now my car is doing the same thing

Anyone deal with this problem?Thanks

Yep, almost every single 240sx that I've come by, mine and all my friends, it has one problem in particular.

Take off the two radiator supports on top of the radiator on the core support. Tip the radiator towards the engine and look infront of the radiator. Mine and most of my firends radiators were covered with everything, mine even had two dead birds between the ac condensor and the radiator, don't ask me how they got there, coz I don't know. It's usually so bad that it restricts most if not all air flow.

I've found plastic bags stuck there.

Plastic bags? DEAD BIRDS!!! GEESH!

Make sure the coolant level is right...also the seams on the top of the radiator might be leaking. I ruined one motor and almost a second by not checking those. But also check for blockage or crushed rows. Reply if you've found anything significat

Has anyone experienced that the temp gauge jumps from cold to operating temp suddenly when it reaches 170?

Have you bleed the system recently? There are many tips and tricks to getting all the air out, search for a full explaination... Keep the front of the car as high as possible, use the bleeder screw, squeeze the hoses, heat on full blast, all these things help.

Anyways, it might be a good idea to change out both your coolant temp sensors. There's one for the temp gauge, and one for the computer. They're cheap, and pretty important IMO.

Also did you install the Tstat with the air 'dimple', at the top?

I have a cheap auto parts store special Tstat in mine, and it actually makes the car run cooler than it should be. Stock Tstat should open around 170 IIRC.
