Actually it is the early production (89 built) NA's that have issues with the valves. Even so, I would still consider one (I have had 3). Most of these have been fixed by now whether under warranty or later in life so a test drive should tell the tale.Any NA made from 91 on is relatively similar...the only notable differences are that Nissan did away with the AIV's in 93 and R134A came in 94. However, the later cars are more expensive, of course. Also, they got heavier due to airbags and safety mandates. But then again, if you are considering a 2+2 then you are not worried about weight anyway. Common Z issues are blown Bose amps (contact me on that) and stinky / rough idle (AIV's) and worn struts / bushings causing inside wear of the front tires. These issues are no big deal, just pesky $$ issues, but anything else likely is. It is always better to spend a little more for the better car...$1000 more in the beginning will likely save you several thousand in the log run.
A 300ZX is a rock solid car, or should be. If the car in question has problems, avoid it. The reason you would do this with a Z and not so much so with other cars is because you can find mint examples if you have patience. So on those lines, also avoid a repainted Z car as the other person said. The original paint on Nissans will hold up at least to a decent extent for 20 years, easy, other than the plastic stuff (mirrors, bumpers). So it is very unlikely that the previous owner shelled out a couple thousand for paint only because it was somewhat faded...oh and somehow every repainted car I've ever looked at was backed into "slightly" in a parking lot...doesn't anyone ever have road accidents? I could write a book as to the excuses I have gotten over the years when buying cars. Just be smart...and hold out for the best Z you can find. Let people who don't care have the rough Z's.
