is the 92 240sx speedo electric or mechanical?Does anyone have a picture of what it look like? I know its located on the right side of the transmission right? If my MPH gauge isnt working is it because of the Speedo or the whole Cluster?I really need help I dont know which one it is.

Do you have HUD or the analog speedo?

If it's HUD, then I bet it is your cluster.

I have a stock Analog Cluster, nothing digital about it.

the speedometer on my 89 240 isnt working right either. it works sometimes, but most of the time it doesnt. its probably only the speedometer, i doubt its the whole cluster. im guessing mines just that the speedometer cable is loose.

Do you have backlight power to your gauges(night-lights)? I had a harness come loose in the rear of my gauges, and it took out the backlights along with my speedo. Pull the codes from your ECU: if it's not seeing the speed sensor signal from the transmission, it will throw a code. I don't remember if the speedo is tapped directly off the speed sensor, or piped through the ECU. Either way if the ECU can't read it, then you won't be able to either.

And just FYI, both the analog and digital gauge versios rely on an electrical speed sensor: no mechanical cable linkage from the transmission.

Which also means we can't calibrate our speedo's like the old domestics(even some of the older imports I suppose)... It couldn't have been hard for Nissan to put an adjustment potentiometer in the rear of the cluster... I mean heck it is all electrical... But then again who manufactures something with intentions of it failing.

You should test the speed sensor to see if it works. Its on the very end of the transmission on the side just before the driveshaft connects to it.

If that sensor is functional, then it could be the wiring or the unit itself.
