Hi guys,

Question please, the mechanic tells me that the water pump gave out and now the engine is trashed. They also tell me that to replace the engine used will be about $4k for the engine alone. Is this accurate?

I love my 240 and don't want to spend a grip on it, but $4k? I don't quite buy it.

She's been with me for the last 7 years and I have 286k miles on it. Been in a few fender benders that have been taken care of. No rust whatsoever and she looks stock and fab.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

AP

p.s. Aztec red is a beautiful color

Well, what exactly caused your problem to begin with? Did it overheat? We need details details details.

$4k for an engine is completely bogus.

hmm Yes it did overheat, I don't know exactly for how long because I looked down and there it was BAM heat gauge all the way to H. I shut it down, let it cool off and made a run for home. Gauge climbed up, I pulled over and shut down again, this time for longer. As you may have guessed already, I"m a chick who loves her car but doesn't know much about how they work other than what gets me by from haynes and chilton trying not to get ripped off at the mechanic. oil change on the regular.

I know it was probably foolish, but it was so cold in these parts AND raining I thought I might be o.k. (mid 30's) to make a run for home. Car kept stalling every time I took my foot off the gas, and had to pop the clutch while rolling to get it moving forward again.

thank you for the confirmation on the parts because IMO they are just trying to get the car because while it has some cosmetic interior things, the outside is purty. I thought they would slap some bar none in the engine and try to turn it around again quick.

Of course I would be livid if I saw it on the road with someone else driving it. Im a little bit of a maniac in that department and won't let people drive my car.

Sounds like I should just go get it and find someone to drop another engine in there for me. I'd HATE to give it up and I think ya'll know what I'm talking about.

I LOVE taking out a car from the line and having their jaws drop open.... 4 cyl old car huh? they just don't know...LOL

If you let it overheat that long like that, then you may have severely warped your cylinder head and block. If you can't get your engine machined back to specs then you may very well have to buy all new/used parts. A brand new engine from everythingnissan.com will cost $5,633.43, not including s/h, and labor to put it in your car. Sorry. Hope for the best

Thanks for the info and website VanNelson, thats good to know. I was told a brand new engine would run me $9k that price does not include labor. So its still pointing to being ripped off.

I was wondering if I'd be able to pull an engine out of a different 240 and put in there.

Again, thanks for the info.

it depends on what your budget is..if you can afford up to $3,500...get an sr swap done...it's much more powerful and the best bang for the buck...but thats if you like racing.

if you're on a tight budget just get a used engine put in there..make sure you can verify the miles and get a warranty.

just to let you know, shutting off a overheated car in general can cause problems. You should turn the heater on high, and let it cool a bit before u turn it off. otherwise you will get a seized motor (is that what happened?)

if you dont care about performance, are on a really tight budget, and just need a running car, with so many miles on it just see what it takes to just get it running and run it to the ground. then find someone on here that did an SR swap and buy there old motor off of them. I havent looked into prices, but i think people let their old motors go for under a grand.

EDIT: its not local but heres an example: zerothread?id=158276
