I've got a recently acquired 92 240sx LE (VIN : JN1MS36S1NW117230), about 50k original miles on it. The car has been sitting in a garage for about 8 months, just been started once in a while but really moved much. Car works fine, maybe a bit sluggish, but that could be due to the air filter being clogged.

When I changed my spark plugs, there was oil in the spark plug well (mostly in one of them) and it wasn't at the bottom of the plug (where the tip is), but on the top part of the plug + wire. What do you think it could be?

Also, there's a rattle (sounds like somethings loose, or worn bearing sound) coming from the front of the engine, looks like it's coming from between the engine and the fans. Can be heard clearly when the hood's popped up, but not loud enough to hear it with the hood down. Any idea what could be loose or broken?

Thanks for helping.

Your spark plug oil issue could very well be the valve cover gasket leaking around the spark plug wells. As for your rattle....timing chain perhaps? When you pull your valve cover to replace the gasket, check the timing chain and remove the top and side guide for the upper chain while you have access to it. IF they are there, it might well have allready been removed.

I also have an 89 which does have the all so common "timing chain rattle" when you start it that dies off after 2-3 seconds.

And this rattle sounds nothing like it, it really does sound like somethings loose. 3 persons tried to pinpoint the origin of the sound and we all came to the conclusion that it seemed to come from the region where the water pump and the other belts are, now what could be loose around that area?. We listened from every angle, even (barely) lifted the oil filler cap when the engine was running (so that if the sound was coming from the interior of the engine, we'd hear it louder with the cap removed) and the intensity of the sound didn't change. So it has to come from the area of the water pump and belt...at least that's what our ears told us.

Thanks for the input anyways.

take all the belts off and start it up, if the noise is gone it is one of your accessories making the noise, if not that leaves only the timing chain components to be making the noise, not dont leave it running for more then 5 mins or so or it will overheat since your water pump isnt circulating coolant. if you find your noise is gone put one belt on at a time and check it till you find the accessory thats generating the noise.
