This is regarding the 1992 240SX I said I bought in a previous thread. It seems the little push button key lock on the column ignition is having problems. When you try to take the key out after driving it, the push button doesn't pop out. The key won't come out at all. If you click up this little metal thing sticking out next to it into the up position, then the button will pop out, then you can push it in and retrieve your key. Is there anyway to fix this or bypass the lock altogether ?

Also, how do you get the stupid column cover off ? I took out the 4 screws at the bottom that I could find and it wouldn't budge. If you have to take the steering wheel off (I'm hoping not), how do you do that ?

I don't know about the ignition problem, but to take the steering column cover off, there are 6 screws total on my '89 240sx, which should be the same as your '92. The 4 you probably got off arethe obvious one, but there are 2 more that are way at the back of the cover along each side. At the back of the cover, you'll see two small vertical grooves that are just big enough to get a screwdriver up there. After some fiddling around in the grooves, you should be able to find and detach the screws. Good luck.

Great thanks. I managed to rig it for now. I stuck one of those fold out things you use to put papers together (I can't remember what it's called - but they are gold/brass color with two pieces of flat metal you fold out after sticking it through the paper) and glued it in place. That kept that little metal thing I was saying that needed to be popped up each time from going back down. Now the pop-out button works fine. You can't really tell, it looks like part of it, so I think I'll just keep it that way...

I still need to get into the column anyway to replace my signal/wiper switches with some fresh ones. They have some pretty bad sundamage.
