Hi,

My 240 is an auto and sometimes there is significant hesitation off idle. It has never stalled but if it gets any worse it may. I've had this problem a long time and done at least one tune up during that time. I have also noticed that the cars seems to run better when the engine is not fully warmed up so I'm thinking it may be an air leak.

I checked all the obvious culprits, leaky air hoses, cracks, PVC. I did not check the EGR as I'm not sure how. Perhaaps O2 sensor? Any tips on what to check?

Thanks

My 93 240 use to run better when it was cold too, then about 2 minutes later it ran like trash. 2 years and 10+ mechanics later, found out it was the spark plug wires. Could be ALOT of things, MAFS is another big cause of this issue.

I put on new wires at the last tune up. -

I have a Tacoma and they are notorious for running poorly when the MAF is dirty (hot wire type MAF). Can the 240 MAF be cleaned?

I have a 93 DOHC 240sx.

Have you tried adjusting the IDLE? RAISING IT higher...?You don't need to check vaccums and all the B.S. Because 95% percent, it is not those problems. It is surely as simple as ADJUSTING Your idle.

Adjust your IDLE SPEED.

Like your car, My car WAS WAS WAS IDLING at 7,00 to 750 rpm. When I popped it into NEUTRAL, the car's Idle drops to almost ZERO.So, I used COMMON sense. By Raising the IDLE Higher that FACTORY.FACTORY IDLE = 700 RPM (+PLUS OR - MINUS 50)WHICH MEANS, 650 RPM TO 750 RPM.

1. I drove the car around the block a few times. (Getting it nice and warmed up)

2. Turn off the CAR

3. Disconnect the TPS (sensor) which is zipped tied onto the Rubber PCV TUBE. (PVC TUBE =The one that goes from the PVC vavle(on the valve cover to the intake)

4. Start the car.

5. Rev the ENGINE from two Thousand RPM to 4,000 rpm.

6. Get a Phillips screw driver, TURN THE IDLE ADJUSTMENT SCREW COUNTER CLOCKWISE, (which opens up the AIR passage and giving you a HIGHER IDLE)

7. Rev the ENGINE again, and set the New IDLE to 1,100 RPM.

8. TURN OFF THE car.

9. Plug back the TPS (Throttle Position SENSOR)...

10. YOU'RE DONE!

11. Now that you're done, everytime you drive, the Idle will sit at less than 1,100rpm ....It will surely fall to 900. and you will not experiece the "Idle DROP".

12. Once you solve that Idle drop, you can go back and Lower the Idle a TAD bit.

You can thank me later. TRY THIS OUT.

Duce,

I just saw your other post and I appreciate your response but my problem is quite different. My idle never drops below factory specs. What is happening is when initially accelerating the car hesitates for less than 1 sec. Cars runs great otherwise.

I'm thinking it could be -

Throttle position sensorMAFOxygen sensor

Ah, okay, No problem

1. I would check the TIMING.

(I changed my timing chain a week ago, and my time was off, and it seemed that the Fuel was Flooding it because I advance/retarded it.)It did the same thing. Hesitated off the Start.

When was the last time you Timed your car?Correct timing will set your car at Stoich level. 14 to 1 ratio: Air to Fuel ratio.

2. AIR + FUEL + IGNITION.

It's one of these 3.

But I really think your TIMING may be off.

=) GOod luck dude! Let us know how it is.
