Ill try and explain this as best I can.

Today I was on my way to class which is in Lansing, about an hour drive. 20 minutes or so and I start to hear whistling sound or even whine from the front of the car, to my right side. Sound gets louder and within 5 seconds a small bang or explosion under the hood. The engin gradually loses power to the point where I almost have to keep the pedal to the floor to keep the car moving at a decent speed. At this point I see a little debris in my rear view. Engine is dogging and struggling but it is at a steady speed. I drive a mile or even 2 to the next exit (car was acting well enough to make it that far.) I make it up the offramp and begin to shift from 5th to 4th. As soon as I take it out of 5th the RPMs hit 0. red lights across the board and I coast in neutral to the light. Pull off to the side and put on the flashers. Now, I try starting the car again but it just will not turn over. I get out and open the hood and there is white (not dark or black) smoke, coming from or around the alternator, possibly below or fromt he engine (It was windy) I ran across the street and had a friend come help me push it across the street to gas station parking lot. Once there I tried once again to start it. It started up but only for a few secinds until it stalled. During those few seconds it sounded as if timing was off or not running on all 4 cyl. I did not notice any oil leaks or missing belts. I honestly did not look at it too much. Recently (within the past week) the oil light would blink or flash for a second. I realise and admit I need to change oil more often. :( Car Info ---------------------1992 Nissan 240sx5 spd manual109k miles on engine/transRecently replaced slave cylinder / No other repairs or problems.

Im hoping someone can help me determine the problem.I have a few ideas but Id like to hear what others have to say.Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks.

It didn't overheat did it?

Maybe you fried some electrical components.. weird that you would see stuff on the road behind you.. did you loose a belt??

I dunno, i'm not a mechanic o_O

sounds like you blew a hole in your lower radiator hose. and you probably did some serious damage to your engine in driving that additional mile or 2 under total power loss. was your temp gauge on full cold after the bang noise? or just before the whistle?

Temp gauge was fine, Engine Temp was where it normally is. Before and after the the bang noise. Im going to go check it out today if i can get a ride out there. Ill check the radiator hose but from what i saw and heard it seemed to me more like a mechanical problem. But, Im no expert :P Timing chain problems were one possibility presented to me also. If it slipped or something like that. (Perhaps wore and broke?) But like i said, Temp was fine and I did not see any loss of fluid below the car.

if it was the chain th car would have imediatly died. it needs the chain to open and close the valves to in unison with the crank. but it does sound like it over heated.the gauge thing seems odd usually when the fluid stops contacting the sensor it goes full cold. so that leaves me second guessing that it was your hose that blew.

Im going to try and get a ride out there today. Ill check the hoses and other things like that. Is it possible the Timing chain just slipped? Im not sure. The car had been great to me up until this point. But I did take notice to the temp gauge before and after the bang. It was normal both times.

it could very well be the timing chain

my vision of the situation may be different then you are really seeing. I have to base it on how you described it. but the temp gauge not changing tells me it was probably not the hose. post what you found when you look it over.

heh... you are gonna love this. I know i did.

I only wish it was the timing chain. So, when this all happened I didnt really have time to screw around with it. I had class and a ride waiting on me. And it was 12 degrees outside. So I finally get to check it out yesterday, and find I have a brand new hole in my block. With a pretty rod hanging out of it. Almost the bow on the gift... Anyways, Im suprised the car didnt just kill its self on the highway. The engine is toast, burnt toast. So uhh... anyone in the Michigan area got a working KA they wanna sell me? ^^

What would have caused that?

It coulda been alot of things, all of which are most likely my fault. The oil was all gone so I wasnt able to check that out. Im sad to see it go. I bought it only a few months ago with something like 104k miles on it. (Most i looked at around here had 30-40k more than that.) All this just when I pay off my tickets :(
